Horse-Sense Electric Fence System®

Electric fence is ideal for horses because it:
is safer than traditional fencing
works effectively
can prevent cribbing and wear on the fence
is less expensive than traditional fencing
is simple to install and maintain
is easy to electrify an existing fence

Horses are easy to control with electric fencing. They are intelligent animals and quickly learn to respect an electric fence. In addition, horses have thin hides with well-groomed coats and are usually shod. If shod, the metal horse shoes make an excellent earth connection, effectively grounding the horse. A well-grounded, well-groomed horse will feel a safe, more intense shock.

Horses tend to use traditional fences as scratching posts, causing the fence to weaken or sag over time (animal pressure). They may also fall into the habit of "cribbing" or chewing fences. An electric fence prevents both of these behaviors, protecting the horse from harm and prolonging the life of the fence.

If a horse is spooked and runs through traditional wire or wooden fencing, injury is more likely to occur than with an electric fence made of poly tape, wire or rope.

Zareba's Horse-Sense Electric Fence System® uses all white components for greater visibility and safety for your horse, as well as creating an aesthetically pleasing fence.

The Horse-Sense fence system incorporates white vinyl sleeves with a protective cap for fence posts, white 1-1/2" poly tape or poly rope, a white insulator, and all the accessories required to install a complete equine fence.

To safely contain horses, you need a fence controller that maintains a minimum of 2,000 - 3,000 volts on the fence line. Voltage levels are impacted by vegetation on the fence line, length of fence and type of poly tape or rope. We recommend a low impedance fence controller for energizing poly tape and rope.

We recommend posts extend 5 feet above ground, spaced about 12 feet apart. Four equally spaced strands of tape or rope provide optimum visibility and safety. Mares and geldings may require only three strands, while stallions and colts may need up to five strands. To contain foals, be sure to have a strand of electrified poly tape/rope close to its nose level.

For trail rides, horse shows, and temporary, portable corrals, consider our EZEE Corral™ or Kwik Korral fence kits. They are quick and easy-to-install fence systems that contain everything you need in one convenient bag.

Electrifying An Existing Fence

You can easily add electrified wire to an existing fence. This option can prevent "cribbing" or chewing the tops of wood fences, keep horses from jumping, or prevent animal pressure on the fence. Select from a variety of Red Snap'r® brand insulators for post-top or fence wire mounting to existing fence.

The SC10N Snap'r Cap'r works well on the top of wood or t-posts. Any of the "extender" type insulators will put the fence wire about 5" out from the existing fence, preventing animals from pressing against it.

Note: Conventional high tensile fence systems and barbed wire are not recommended for equine fencing, as they are more likely to injure horses.

Use the Fence Builder™ fence planning tool for assistance in planning your fence.
